The First Real Bambu A1 Competitor? | Creality SparkX i7 Review
If I had to get rid of either my Bambu Lab A1 or my Creality SparkX i7, I would keep the SparkX. I wouldn’t have to think about it for very long, either.
That probably sounds like a strange way to start a review when the first unit Creality sent me had to be replaced. But both things are true. My first printer gave me a lot of problems, and the replacement produced some prints that I am really happy with. Especially once I put a 0.2 mm nozzle in it.
There is quite a bit to talk about here, so let’s get into it.

The first printer was not a good experience
I want to get this out of the way because it would be pretty convenient to only talk about the replacement.
On the original unit, none of the CFS Lite RFID readers were working. Creality sent me experimental firmware that fixed that part, but the more serious problems stayed. The printer would lose communication with the CFS, pause, and refuse to carry on until I power cycled it.
Power loss recovery worked, but I then kept getting nozzle temperature and communication errors. That meant failed prints, inconsistent results, and a review that had to be put on hold.
Creality sent another unit. That one behaved very differently, including successfully printing the same model the original printer struggled with. Everything I say about the good results needs to be read with that first experience in mind. I got a bad unit. Replacing it fixed my situation, but it doesn’t make that experience disappear.
Setup was easy, and the light strip actually won me over
The combo I received arrived mostly assembled. Setup was mainly removing the transport hardware, connecting the PTFE tubes and CFS cable, and running the calibrations.
And yes, the resemblance to the A1 is pretty obvious. I’m more interested in how something works than whether it looks familiar, though.
One difference I expected to ignore was the RGB strip. I initially treated it as a gimmick. Then I started using the printer while working at my desk.
My replacement SparkX was quiet enough that I couldn’t always tell by sound whether it was still printing. Being able to turn around and immediately see its status from the light was surprisingly useful. Printing, paused, or an error, I could tell without walking over to it.
I did not expect to have strong feelings about a light strip, but here we are.
CFS Lite: easy to load, with one annoying detail
The setup in this review uses CFS Lite. That matters because the CFS Nano combo linked below is a different configuration.
I like the enclosed design of the Lite, and I found loading it easier than loading the AMS Lite in my setup. Feed a little filament into the inlet and it takes care of the rest. The enclosure and desiccant storage also make more sense to me than leaving freshly dried filament completely exposed.
What I don’t particularly like is how loose the filament can get on the spool after retractions. The rollers underneath are passive, so they don’t actively wind the spool back up. It never caused a tangle during my testing, but I kept finding myself taking the spool out and tidying up the loose wraps by hand.
The other thing to think about is space. A bed slinger needs room for the moving bed, and putting the CFS beside it takes up even more of the table. I used an overhead shelf designed by Darren 3D Print, which made a lot more sense in my workspace.
About that “50% less waste” claim
This is where the small print matters.
The claim discussed in the video compared the SparkX against Creality’s previous-generation machines. It did not mean you would automatically get half the waste of a Bambu Lab A1.
Here are the results from my multicolor comparison:

There are some pretty important qualifications here. The first SparkX was faulty, the printers used different filaments, and the replacement’s flushing settings were adjusted. This is what happened in my tests, not a controlled demonstration that one machine always beats the other.
For the adjusted print, I used an aggressive 0.2 flushing multiplier. It reduced time and waste, but I also got some red bleeding into areas where it shouldn’t be. I would not just copy that number and assume it will work with every combination of colors.
My takeaway is that the A1 and SparkX are much closer than the marketing might lead you to expect. Filament, color transitions, and flushing settings make a big difference. There is room to improve on the presets, but saving filament isn’t much of a win if the colors end up wrong.
An 82-hour print, then a lot of tiny details
With the standard 0.4 mm nozzle, I ran a multicolor model by Unicorn Graveyard that took 82 hours and generated about 600 g of waste.
That’s a long time with a lot of opportunities for something to go wrong. The replacement finished it without the layer shifts or interruptions I had been worried about. The result wasn’t flawless, and I still felt some of the filament profiles needed work, but it was a good result from a long, demanding job.
Then I switched to the 0.2 mm nozzle, and this is where I started having a lot of fun.
Not every print worked immediately. A Crash Bandicoot model failed on the first attempt, and the small supports were fragile. Changing the filament and using a better-matched preset gave me a much better reprint.
The Geralt bust was one of my favorite results. The eyes, necklace chain, and stitching in the belts all retained an impressive amount of detail.
Am I saying it replaces a resin printer? No. I own resin printers, and there is still a difference. But for FDM, I was really impressed. I kept using the small nozzle even though it was slow. The Crash reprint took around six hours, and the blacksmith diorama I printed afterward took about 40.
That’s the trade-off. If you want the detail, you need to be comfortable waiting for it.
Some of the other tests were less successful
My TPU print clogged before it finished. I don’t think that test was clean enough to blame the printer: the spool placement was poor, the filament dragged across the frame, and the roll had been sitting open for about two years without being dried.
The silk vase with the 0.8 mm nozzle wasn’t a great combination of model, settings, and material either. I used vase mode on a model that wasn’t designed for it, pushed the speed too hard, and lost some of the silk finish and detail.
The PETG planter looked good overall, especially the fuzzy-skin section, but the base would have benefited from slowing down.
I am including those because not everyone buying this printer is going to know which settings need changing. The machine is capable of good results, but a preset doesn’t automatically make every model and material a good match.
Easy maintenance is a real advantage
Nozzle changes are straightforward, and the toolhead cover comes away without a fan cable attached to it. Accessing the extruder gears is also very easy. Those are things I appreciate much more than another feature that sounds exciting on a product page but barely gets used.
My complaint is the integrated four-in-one PTFE adapter. If that part gives you trouble, replacing a larger assembly is less appealing than replacing the small part itself.
I also liked the camera much more than the one on my A1. It wasn’t perfectly smooth, but it was a useful improvement in my setup.
Would I keep it? Yes. Would I tell everyone to buy it? No.
The replacement SparkX earned its place in my workshop. I liked the print quality, the small-nozzle results, the quiet operation, and how easy it was to work on.
That doesn’t mean it is automatically the right printer for everyone. I generally prefer an enclosed CoreXY over a bed slinger, and the original faulty unit is still part of this review. These were my initial experiences, not a claim about years of reliability.
But between my A1 and this working SparkX? The SparkX stays. I’ll keep using it, and the longer-term updates will show up on the channel as I have more to share.
